Great Photo-Ops in Des Moines

As a Drake University student, I am able to explore and enjoy the city of Des Moines, IA. It was exciting to learn that there are so many great places for a photo-op in the city. Whenever I want to have fun with my friends, we all get in the car and have photoshoots at these great locations.

Pappajohn Sculpture Park

Located downtown, the Pappajohn Sculpture Park has it all! There are a wide variety of art pieces to use in your pictures and the outdoor scenery creates a picturesque atmosphere. Going on a sunny day can create amazing natural lighting. You can have a great view of the Des Moines skyline and it’ll get you out of the house to get some fresh air!

Gray’s Lake

Another great outdoor location, Gray’s Lake offers incredible views and photogenic scenery! Surrounded by a body of water, there is a whole perimeter to travel around to find your perfect photoshoot location. Take advantage of the natural lighting once again to create beautifully lit photos in nature. You might also get to see some cute dogs on walks while you’re at it. Sometimes it might be windy, so prepare for that!

The Des Moines Art Center

Do you love art? Well the Des Moines Art Center allows you to submerge yourself in incredible pieces, as well as provide great photoshoot opportunities. Make sure to not use your flash, but you can bring in professional cameras to have a very artistic shoot. In the modern art section, there is a whole room dedicated to a neon art piece that can create incredible photos for you and your friends. Make sure not to touch the art, though!

Downtown Farmer’s Market

One of the best parts about being able to live in Des Moines is the Downtown Farmer’s Market that’s open every Saturday morning during the summer. Not only does this create a fun photoshoot of investigating local vendors of food, flowers, and more, but it’s also surrounded by painted buildings and in the heart of the city. Valley Junction also offers a farmer’s market on Thursdays that also has a variety of antique shops and scenic buildings to take advantage of.
